The Ministry of Kaapi was inspired by and dreamt up in New York City, in an itty-bitty apartment in the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Five years ago, I, a California transplant, met an Indian expat at El Rio Grande (arguably, the best First Date Bar in the city; side note) and fell in love. Being from the West, I shared my fondness of surfing and all things organic + green + juice with him. Hailing from the East, he made me kaapi in bed. Life was never the same.
After a few months of bliss, ploughing through his coveted coffee supplies, I was down to the last spoonful. I searched high and low to replenish his stockpile (and another coffee filter – I needed my own!), but there was none. In disbelief that something so amazing couldn’t be found in The City (THE CITY of ALL cities, where cultures meet and worlds collide…), I set out on a mission to change just that.
At the tail end of 2013, I put the wheels in motion, charting a course to visit coffee estates and meet the people behind India’s best-kept brewed secret. I trekked my way across the mud-laden, back roads of Southern India and found just what I was looking for – the legendary obsession of kaapi – and brought it back.
