Socrates is a 15-year-old boy living a hardscrabble life on the margins of São Paulo. After his mother’s sudden death, he finds himself alone and without any kind of support. As Socrates searches for a new sense of family, he learns on a whole new level what being an adult is all about.
Socrates’ story might have made for a sad story — except Socrates is a resourceful, proud and determined young man with an inspirational sense of fortitude. The amazing distinction of this film, produced by Ramin Bahrani, is that Socrates was entirely co-written, produced and acted by real at-risk teenagers from local low-income communities, with the support of UNICEF.
