The extraordinary rise of Miami’s own Cécile McLorin Salvant, already renowned as one of America’s top jazz vocalists at the age of only 29, is chronicled in this gorgeous love letter to the storied talent of our hometown treasure. Filmmakers Dennis Scholl (The Last Resort) and Marlon Johnson continue their series of explorations on the most intriguing south Florida musical stories, as Singular follows previous Miami Film Festival premieres Deep City and Sweet Dillard.

Anchored around a rapturously pristine recording of a recent McLorin concert at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center, Singular follows Cécile’s story from her Haitian and French heritage roots to her studies in Europe and her breakout successes, winning the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, being nominated for a Grammy for her recorded albums, and acclaim with profiles in such publications as The New York Times, The Guardian and The New Yorker. Through it all, Cécile’s smooth cadences, both in her singing performances and her speaking voice, caress our eardrums like soft velvet.

After the world premiere of the documentary, Cécile McLorin Salvant and her wonderful band will take to the Olympia Theater stage and play a live set to give Festival audiences the truest sensation of her most singular talent!
