Inspired by the real life stories of the children involved in Operation Pedro Pan, the mass exodus of over 14,000 unaccompanied minors, “This Is Your Cuba” tells the story of 10-year old Anton. It’s the 1960s in Cuba and Castro has just come into power. Communism is beginning to take hold and divide the community–you’re either pro-revolution or dissident. Young revolutionaries, known as Pioneros, walk the streets in their uniforms as soldiers occupy the neighborhoods, harassing shop owners and other citizens.
“This Is Your Cuba” portrays Anton’s life as he realizes just how much his beloved Cuba is changing in the midst of the Cuban Revolution. His life and his country will never be the same in this tale that seeks to explore the effects and consequences a revolution has on a young child’s mind and perception of the world.
