Almost overnight in 2018, Spanish television series became a worldwide phenomenon via such blockbuster hits as La casa de papel and Élite. Next in line is Gigantes, which Miami Film Festival is proud to present for the first time in North America. Boasting the pedigree of such Spanish cinematic giants as Goya-winning filmmaker Enrique Urbizu and star Jose Coronado, reteaming after their global breakout hit No Rest for the Wicked, the new series follows the cocaine-dealing Guerrero family as they set their sights on the popular Rastro flea market, a staple in Madrid’s downtown life.
In the midst of seedy, loud, and overflowing streets, Abraham Guerrero opens up shop, teaching his three sons Daniel, Tomás and Clemente (played by Carlos “Nene” Librado, who will attend the premiere to present in person) the ropes along the way. As leaders of the drug business within Spain, and the main distributors of cocaine in Europe, the Guerreros’ enormous power and hold over huge parts of European society is navigated with cunning precision. When oldest brother Daniel is released from prison after 9 years, he is eager to make up for lost time — but with the police watching the family more closely than ever, Daniel’s every move could put everything Abraham built in jeopardy.
Miami Film Festival is proud to present the first two episodes of one of the biggest hits of 2018 in Spain. Gigantes is a restless, bold, fast-paced tale of brotherhood and rivalry, where alliances are broken as quickly as they are made, and blood loss and violence reign supreme. In this world, the three brothers will have to learn to stand united against their rivals and the police, or they will risk losing the empire their ruthless father built, the only thing they have ever called home.
